Getting Ready for the Holidays? Avoid These 5 Common RV Prep Mistakes

It’s that time of year. You’re prepping the RV for a holiday road trip, picturing the open road, the great meals, and some serious relaxation. The Arizona landscapes are calling, and you’re ready to answer.

In all that excitement, it’s just so easy to skip a few small things. Unfortunately, those are often the exact things that turn a great vacation into a roadside headache.

We’ve helped folks in your exact shoes get on the road for years, and we see the same honest mistakes pop up every season. Real holiday RV travel prep & safety isn’t about a huge, overwhelming checklist; it’s about having a smart one.

5 Common RV Oversights During the Holidays

The “Quick Glance” at Tires and Brakes

This one is probably the most common. It’s easy to focus on the “home” part of the motorhome and just give the “motor” part a quick kick. But a tire kick isn’t an inspection. Your tires are carrying your entire home and family. Before any trip, you have to get hands-on: check the pressure (when they’re cold!) and look at every single sidewall for cracks.

And your brakes? They are working to stop a house. Let that sink in for a second. They deserve a professional look to make sure they’re ready for the highway.

Forgetting How Tricky Arizona Weather Can Be

This is the classic Arizona trap. You’re in shorts in Phoenix, but you’re heading north to the Grand Canyon or Flagstaff. You will hit freezing temperatures, especially overnight. Forgetting to winterize your pipes for that part of the trip is a vacation-ender. A frozen, burst water line is a mess you just don’t need. On the flip side, if your rig was winterized, be methodical about flushing all the antifreeze out. Nobody wants that taste in their morning coffee.

Just Assuming the Power Will Be There

The holidays demand more from your rig. The furnace runs more, you’re cooking bigger meals, and the lights are on longer. A huge mistake is just assuming the batteries, generator, and propane can keep up.

Don’t assume: test. Do your house batteries actually hold a full charge? Start your generator and put it under a real load (like the microwave) for 20 minutes. And please, top off your propane tanks. There is no worse feeling than the furnace dying at 3 a.m. on a 30-degree night.

Skipping the 5-Minute “What If” Check

This is the five-minute check everyone skips, and it’s one of the most important parts of holiday RV travel prep & safety. We all get complacent.

  • Press the test button on your smoke, CO, and propane leak detectors. Don’t just trust the little green light.
  • Check the expiration date on your fire extinguisher. (Yes, they expire!)
  • Glance inside your first-aid kit. Is it still stocked? You hope you never need this gear, but if you do, it has to work.

The “We Need It All” Overpack

It’s the holidays! You’re bringing gifts, extra food, and warmer clothes. It is so easy to overload your RV. Every rig has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which is a hard limit you should never, ever exceed.

An overloaded RV is flat-out dangerous. It puts a ton of strain on your tires, brakes, and suspension. It’s not just how much you pack, but where. An unbalanced load, with all the heavy stuff in the back, can make your rig’s handling scary, especially in high winds.

Your Holiday Should Be About Relaxing

Your trip should be memorable for the right reasons, not for a roadside breakdown. A little thoughtful preparation is what makes a smooth journey happen.
